Ani 55 Portfolio

Here is my portfolio for the Ani 55 class. It is divided into sections featuring 10 of the best-- 10-30 second warm ups, 1-2 minute gestures, 4-5 minute poses, and 10-20 minute poses. I still have some editing to do on it, particularly with adjusting tones, getting rid of a few of the weaker figures, and consistent text placement.

Full-Size Figure

Last week, we did an interesting experiment where we drew on 5-6 ft sheets of paper to create a life-size model. It was quite the undertaking and it easily led to you running into all sorts of issues, especially concerning proportion and stiffness of the gesture. It was really cool though, and I'm glad I had that experience.

Apr 20 Week- Best 20

This week we studied hands. We still started the classes with full body gestures, though this time we went straight into 1 minute poses.

Here are 5 minute studies of both pull body poses and hand construction. The hands in the bottom right-hand corner are from a 20 minute study that destroyed my brain.

Apr 15 Week- 10 Best Figures

This past week we've continued to try to emulate our favorite artists. I tried to channel Glen Keane, though I relied too heavily on outlines.

Glen Keane Inspired David Figures

For our latest homework, we had to emulate an artist that we love while drawing 3 different statues of David. I chose Glen Keane and while he's nearly impossible to imitate, I'm quite happy with these. (Though the Donatello one and I had some issues...)

Apr 8 Week- 10 Best Figures

Our teacher Owen was sick with the flu last class, so his rad TA Dustin led a shorter class for us. I had a "hit or miss" kind of day in terms of drawings.

I was quite pleased with my longer poses. I'm finding that I'm benefiting from the longer poses more often than the shorter ones-- which is a little odd for me.

Apr 1 Week- 10 Best and the Sabine Women

I had another decent session with my figures-- I feel like the charcoal stick is really helping me to loosen up. We actually had a twenty minute pose, which was a surprisingly nice change of pace. I kind of missed longer poses.

We also had homework over our spring break to study images of the Rape of the Sabine Women statue from different angles. We had to draw 3 gestures and 3 constructions of it-- I made the mistake of drawing the construction on top of the gesture instead of starting a new image, though.

Mar 16 Week- Back in the Zone

I found myself armed with a stick of charcoal and back in the zone this past week. I did several gestures and longer poses that I was quite pleased with-- I wasn't nearly as stiff as I was last week.

Mar 9 Week- 20 Best Gestures and Poses

Some quick poses done in charcoal, china marker, and the dreaded ballpoint pen. I was awfully stiff this week...

We played around with different mediums like crayons and a brush & ink too.

Mar 3- 10 Best Figures, Turnarounds, and Collaborations

Here are my 10 best figure drawings from the week. We did some fun and unusual practices on Monday, including drawing with both hands simultaneously and drawing the figure upside down.

For three separate 20 minute poses, we took our drawing pads around the room for 1 min poses at different angles, creating a figure "turnaround".

We also did class collaborations where we moved around the room and worked on other students' figures for a minute at a time.

Feb 25- Homework and In-Class Work

Here are a few of my homework gestures from last weekend. We had to do 25 blind contours, 25 "walking the form" figures, and 25 groups of people.

Here are my figures from in-class. We focused a lot on shadow shapes and highlights.

Feb 16 Figures

My better gestures from the week.

My best long poses-- we focused on construction again and also explored "finding the form" through a continuous line.

30 Action Gestures

Here are thirty action gestures I did using the website http://reference.sketchdaily.net/. Each are a minute long.
